Emory & Henry 2, EMU 1
The opener was a tight duel, with miscues figuring into all three of the unearned runs.
The Royals took the lead in the second after Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) reached on an error. Savannah Jones (Stanley, Va./Page County) followed with a triple to right, bringing in Reath. But Jones was thrown out at home when she tried to score after an overthrown attempt at Reath.
Emory & Henry tied it up in their next at-bat, after a misplayed, two-out single allowed a runner to score from first.
The Wasps snuck in a run in the top of the seventh, getting a two-out single combined with an extra base after another fielding error. EHC's Caley Hodge ripped a double to center to plate the run, giving the visitors their first lead at 2-1.
Jones hit a one-out double in the bottom of the frame, but back-to-back outs snuffed out EMU's final chance.
Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) started in the circle and fell to 5-2 with the hard-luck loss. She struck out six and both of EHC's runs were unearned.
Jones had two of EMU's four hits. Reath and Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) had the others.
EMU 6, Emory & Henry 2
In the nightcap, the women again got on the board first, this time courtesy of a two-out Wasp error in the bottom of the first. Emory & Henry tied it with a leadoff homer in the second, but the Royals went back in front when Reath jacked a two-run bomb to left in the third.
The middle of EHC's order did damage again in the fourth, getting a double and single to start the frame, cutting the lead to 3-2. Reath helped her cause in the bottom of the frame, hitting a two-run double to left with two outs. She then scored from second when Jones reached on muffed throw by the Wasps' first baseman, making it 6-2.
Over the final three innings, Reath re-took control from the circle, working around a double in the each of the fifth and sixth innings to get the win.
The sophomore improved to 6-0 with the complete game win. At the plate, she batted 2-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Seale and Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) each had two hits and scored a run. Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) touched home twice. Taylor Hensley Orange, Va./Orange County) had a single and walk.
