Box Score EMU's volleyball men started their second straight weekend road trip to Pennsylvania with a win, sweeping past host Penn State-Behrend Friday night in Erie, Pa. The Royals (8-4/2-0 CVC) return to conference play Saturday morning with a 9:00am match at Thiel College.
There wasn't much drama against the Lions (2-5) as EMU streaked to a 5-1 lead in the opener. The men added a 5-0 run late and won set one, 25-14.
Penn State-Behrend had a very early lead in the second before the Royals struck a 7-1 run to grab an 8-4 lead. The small cushion lasted all set, which closed at 25-19.
The Lions again grabbed an early edge in the third set, leading by as many as four before EMU flipped in front, 12-10. A 5-0 run broke a 20-20 tie as Eastern Mennonite took the clincher, 25-20.
The men hit .260 as a team, tying their season high with 39 kills in a three-set match. Setter Christian Taylor (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) ran the offense well and finished with 34 assists and three blocks.
Tim Callahan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led all players with 10 kills, but Josh Elmore (Chester, Va./Matoaca), Dan Lutz (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) and Scott Brigham (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) were right behind him with eight each. William Ragland (North Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) landed three service aces.
Defensively, Brigham racked up 16 digs. Lutz added three blocks.
Trenton Munk led Penn State-Behrend with eight kills and four blocks.
