Box Score The Eastern Mennonite men's soccer team is on a roll, scoring six goals for the second consecutive game. Saturday night, they did the trick on the road, bowling over host Guilford College by a final of 6-2 in Greensboro, N.C.
The Royals earned a 6-0 shutout of Emory & Henry at home on Tuesday, and now sit at 2-2 in the ODAC and in a four-way tie for fifth in the league standings.
After the back-to-back explosions against ODAC midlings, EMU will test its attack against Washington and Lee at home this Wednesday night. The Generals (7-3-1/2-2 ODAC) were the preseason favorite in the ODAC, but are regrouping after losses in three of their last four games.
Eastern Mennonite (8-3) got going early against the Quakers (1-12/1-3 ODAC). Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) pasted in a cross from David Shafer (Maitland, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) in the eighth minute, giving the men a 1-0 lead on the game's first shot.
Seven minutes later, Nik Tucker (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) beat GC's keeper only to have a defender save the shot. He settled for an assist as Daniel Obour (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) knocked in the rebound for a 2-0 margin.
The Quakers did not fold, getting a goal from A.J. Hawkins after a throw-in to cut the lead in half, but Caleb Oakes (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) got it back in the 37th, heading in a corner kick off the foot of Joshua Chiquillo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field).
Shafer got his own goal early in the second half, blasting in a shot from 20 yards out to make it 4-1.
Jake Grieco scored off a set piece in the 63rd, heading in a corner as Guilford got back within two, but the Royals pulled away with their depth. Jesus Trejo (Winchester, Va./John Handley) stuck in a laser beam of a free kick from 25 yards out 10 minutes later, and Oakes knocked in the final score on another header, this time off a cross from Daniel Howard (Stafford, Va./Mountain View). This assist gave the junior his first career point.
Eastern Mennonite controlled play, out-shooting their hosts 32-10. Half of their shots were on goal, compared to only four from Guilford. Cody Martin (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle) made a pair of saves for EMU.
The Royals also had a sizeable 13-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Tucker led the team with three shots on goal, while six other men put two attempts on target.
