Box Score 2 The ODAC's top offense shone through on day one of the ODAC Softball Tournament, as second-seeded Eastern Mennonite earned a pair of wins to advance in the winner's bracket.
The Royals take on top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday at noon in a meeting of the two remaining teams without a loss in the double elimination tourney. Saturday's schedule has been adjusted to earlier starts due to forecasted rain.
Despite being out-hit in both games, the Royals found ways to score. EMU used a four-run inning to surge past Randolph 6-3 in the first round, before scoring all three of their runs in the bottom of the seventh of a 3-2 walk-off win over Guilford. VWC, ranked No. 3 in the NFCA National Poll, had wins over Emory & Henry and Roanoke on Friday.
With the two wins, Eastern Mennonite improves to 30-12, tying their program record for wins in a season.
EMU 6, Randolph 3
The WildCats took the first lead by scoring two runs on a two-out bases loaded single in the top of the third. Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) lined a double to start EMU's half of the third, and the Royals got rolling. Danyele Smith (Broadway, Va./Broadway) executed a bunt squeeze play to bring in the first run, and Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) gave the Royals the lead with a two-run double with two outs. Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) followed with a single up the middle, plating another run for a 4-2 lead.
After sending Randolph down in order in the fourth, EMU kept up their offense in their next at-bat. Tiffani Shaheen (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna County) led off with a bunt single and Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) smacked a homerun over the left field fence for a 6-2 margin.
Randolph added an unearned run in the sixth, but pitcher Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) allowed just one baserunner in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings combined to lock up the win.
Foltz hit her second homer of the year and finished 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Miller reached base each time she came to the plate, getting a double, walk and hit by pitch while driving in two runs.
EMU 3, Guilford 2
The Quakers put the clamps on EMU's offense, allowing just two hits over the first six innings. GC managed an unearned run in the first and added a leadoff homer in the seventh for a 2-0 lead.
With the bats being limited, the Royals' seniors turned the game around with their eyes, as Miller and Lucas led off the bottom of the seventh by drawing back-to-back walks. After a fly ball for the first out, Seale came through with a clutch gapper to left center, bringing home both runners to tie it up. A single from Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) put runners on the corners, but another fly ball made for the second out. Shaheen kept the game from extra innings, however, as the slap hitter put the ball into the infield dirt and beat the throw to first, allowing Seale to come home for the game-winning run.
EMU finished with five walks and five hits in the victory. Shaheen was 2-4 with the final RBI. Seale finished 1-2 with a walk and two RBIs. She accounted for all three of the women's runs. Miller added a pair of walks.
Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started in the circle, allowing both GC runs in 6.0+ innings. Seale took over in the seventh and earned her second win of the day to improve to 11-4.
