Softball Team Limited In ODAC Split At Randolph

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Even the ODAC's best offense can have off days, as was the case for Eastern Mennonite's softball team on Saturday. The women scored early to win game one, but ended the day with 11 straight scoreless at-bats after a tough 1-0 loss to Randolph in the nightcap.

At 25-11 overall, the Royals are already tied for the third-most wins in program history. The 2008 team holds the high-water mark at 30 wins. EMU won 27 games in each of the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

The women are third in the ODAC standings at 11-5 and wrap up their conference slate with a key doubleheader against second-place Lynchburg tomorrow in Harrisonburg. The Hornets are 11-3 in the ODAC and still have a doubleheader at fourth-place Randolph-Macon next weekend.

First pitch Sunday against LC is at 1:30, although there will be a pre-game ceremony at 1:15pm honoring Kaitlin Aylor, an incoming student-athlete who lost her life in an accident before what would have been her freshman year of 2014-15. It's also Senior and Parent Recognition Day for the Royals, with those ceremonies immediately following game one of the twinbill on Gehman Field.

EMU 6, Randolph 1
The women started the day by picking up where they left off, with leadoff batter Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) putting a single into left field. She eventually touched home on a sacrifice fly from Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy). Randolph tied it with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first, but the offense kept rolling.

They started the second with a walk and back-to-back hits, with a run scoring when Randolph botched the throw in from the outfield. Hill put up a sacrifice fly to plate another, making it 3-1.

The WildCats went down in order in the bottom of the frame, but EMU only picked up steam. Danyele Smith (Broadway, Va./Broadway) started the third with a single and Reath sent her home with an RBI double. Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) and Hill each added RBI singles to make it 6-1.

Randolph made a pitching change which put a stop to EMU's offensive ways. Reath, meanwhile, was getting out of jams from the Royals' circle. She stranded the bases loaded in Randolph's fourth, and then left four more on base over the final three frames to keep the home team at arm's length.

Reath improved to 11-7 with the complete game victory, scattering seven hits while striking out five.

Hill was again a wrecking ball, batting 3-3 with two RBIs and a run. Seale batted 2-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Reath added two RBIs and a run scored.

Randolph 1, EMU 0
Unfortunately the quiet offense carried over into the second game, as the Royals were limited to four hits.

Hill again led off the game with a single and stood on third with just one out, but her teammates couldn't bring her home, leaving the bases loaded. EMU again had the bases packed in the fifth but couldn't score.

The WildCats snuck in their only run in the first only getting the ball out of the infield once. After a leadoff walk and single, a bunt single scored the game's only run.

Seale worked out of jams in the second and fourth innings before retiring the final seven batters. But EMU's top of the order went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, handing the Royals just their third shutout of the year, and first to a team not ranked in the national poll.

Smith reached based twice on walks while Seale also reached twice with a single and a walk.
