Box Score 2 EMU's softball women finally have a winning streak. After sweeping Wednesday's games at the Fastpitch Dreams classic in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Royals have won three straight to improve to 5-3 overall. They had settled for a split in each of their first three outings.
The women play two more games in the Palmetto State on Thursday before heading for home. First up is Anna Maria in a late morning game before closing with Hilbert in the afternoon.
EMU 8, Lycoming 2
The Royals used two big innings to roll over a talented Lycoming team, which entered the game with a record of 4-0. The Warriors had already earned a quality win over ODAC team Emory & Henry as well as Gettysburg, who had beaten EMU on Monday.
Eastern Mennonite's women started quickly with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) drove in the first run with a single and Danyele Smith (Broadway, Va./Broadway) later ripped a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
Lycoming scored once in the fourth, but an RBI single from Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) got it back in the fifth. The Warriors loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but pitcher Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) kept the ball in the infield to allow only one run on an RBI groundout.
Leading 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Royals put the game away. Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) and Tiffani Shaheen (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna County) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After an error loaded the bases, the women used a walk, another error and a sacrifice fly to touch home four times for the final 8-2 margin.
Reath scattered nine hits to improve to 3-2.
Sheets and Shaheen each had three singles, while Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) put some meat into the middle of the order by batting 3-3 with a walk, three runs, and an RBI. Smith drove in three runs.
EMU 8, Penn State-Altoona 0 – 5 innings
The women kept the offense rolling in their second game, scoring in every inning of a mercy-shortened shutout of Penn State-Altoona.
Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) locked down the Lions with a one-hitter. She struck out 10 Lions.
The batters banged out 12 hits, wrapping the night up with a two-run single from Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
Smith led a balanced effort by going 2-2 from the plate with a run and RBI. Shaheen and Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) were each 2-3 with a run and RBI.
