Box Score 2 Splits are becoming the Royals' thing.
EMU's softball women won one and lost one on their second day at Fastpitch Dreams in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. After doing the same thing on Monday, as well as Saturday's twinbill at Greensboro, the women sit at 3-3 so far this season.
They play Lycoming and Penn State-Altoona Wednesday afternoon at Fastpitch Dreams before wrapping up on Thursday.
Penn State-Berks 2, EMU 1
The first game of the day was ripe with missed opportunities and runners left on base. The Lions scored in the top of the first on a two-out single.
The Royals struck back in the bottom of the second after Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led off with a double. She moved to third when PS-Berks' shortstop dropped an infield fly and then scored on Payton Hill's (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) single up the middle.
The women left the bases loaded in the third to remain tied at 1-1. Finally in the top of the sixth the deadlock broke when the Lions took the lead on an RBI groundout.
Eastern Mennonite loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't bring a runner home after a pair of infield pop ups and a groundout ended the game.
The Royals had eight hits with two walks and Penn State-Berks added a pair of errors, but leaving eight women on base stifled the women. Payton Hill finished 2-3 with the lone RBI while Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) also had a pair of singles.
Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) went the distance in the circle, striking out nine but taking the loss.
EMU 9, La Roche 0 – 6 innings
The Royals dominated La Roche, but took a while to dent home.
Catcher Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) got things started with a two-out RBI single in the top of the third. Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) made it 3-0 with a two-run homer in the fourth. They scored one more in the fifth.
Finally in the sixth the women really put things together. EMU combined five hits with two walks to put up five runs. Danyele Smith (Broadway, Va./Broadway) added a big two-RBI double to wrap up the scoring.
Pitcher Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) sent the Redhawks down in order in five of the six frames. She allowed two hits to lead off the fifth, but worked out of the jam with two ground outs and a strike out.
Three women each had three hits. Leadoff batter Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) finished 3-3 with a walk and two runs. Carli Hill was 3-3 with two RBIs, while Reath batted 3-4 with a couple of runs and one RBI.
