No. 3 Captains Steer Past Softball Women

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

For the second time in less than a week, EMU's softball women made the long trip to the Hampton Roads area to take on a national power. Unfortunately both road trips had similar results, as the Royals came home with a pair of losses, this time to No. 3 Christopher Newport University.

Eastern Mennonite sits at 13-7 as they look to delve back into ODAC play. After losing twice to No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan last Wednesday, the Royals will try to improve on their 0-2 league mark this Wednesday when they host Shenandoah. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 3:00pm in Harrisonburg.

Christopher Newport 10, EMU 4
The Captains scrapped in a run in the bottom of the first, but Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) jacked a three-run homerun with two away in the second to jump EMU ahead, 3-1.

It stayed that way until the third, where CNU brought home four unearned runs, all with two outs. The inning had residual effects, as the Captains scored at least one more run in each of their next three at-bats, building a 10-3 edge.

The Royals added a single run in the top of the seventh, but couldn't mount a bigger comeback rally.

Tiffani Shaheen (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna County) was the only woman with multiple hits, finishing 2-4. Lucas was 1-3 with her fifth homerun of the season.

Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started in the circle and took the loss. She gave up five runs, although only one was earned, in 2.2 innings.

Christopher Newport 6, EMU 2
The nightcap remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when a one-out error cost the Royals. CNU ended up scoring five unearned runs in the frame to the first lead.

EMU got their own unearned damage in the fifth when Danyele Smith (Broadway, Va./Broadway) reached on a two-out error. Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) followed with a two-run bomb to right center.

But Christopher Newport got one run back in the bottom of the frame, and the women managed only one more baserunner.

Hill finished 1-2 from the plate with her first homer in a Royals uniform. Smith also doubled.

Reath threw all six innings in the second game, scattering 12 hits and one earned run.
