Royals Dropped In Showdown At No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EMU's nine-game winning streak was snuffed out by nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon in Virginia Beach. The Royals showed they have the ability to play with the perennial powers, but eventually dropped both decisions to the Marlins to slip to 11-5 overall and 0-2 in the ODAC.

The women will look to rebound in a rescheduled set at Mary Washington on Friday. Start time with the Eagles in Fredericksburg is 3:00pm.

Virginia Wesleyan 2, EMU 0
The opener was as close as expected, with the Marlins' first-inning runs making the difference. Pitcher Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) hit VWC's first batter, and a pair of RBI doubles made it 2-0.

Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) was EMU's first baserunner after a leadoff double in the third. She was sacrificed to third, but a pair of groundouts left her stranded.

The top of the order then loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth, and the Royals looked to be in business. VWC's All-ODAC pitcher, Mary Shipp, got out of the jam, however, before using a double play in the seventh to hold off the women.

Reath had two of EMU's five hits. Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) also reached twice with a single and walk.

Seale allowed just four hits against the talented Marlins but fell to 3-2.

Virginia Wesleyan 9, EMU 0 – 5 innings
The nightcap got out of hand quickly, as EMU's defense committed back-to-back to open the bottom of the second and the Marlins obliged with five unearned runs. They struck again in the fourth, scoring four more for the final tally.

EMU got their lone hit on Carli Hill's (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) two-out single in the fourth. Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) and Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) drew walks in the fifth for the women's only other runners.

Reath threw 3.0+ innings, giving up 10 hits and eight runs, although only one was earned. Seale closed out the final frame and was tagged for the final run.

Third baseman Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway), normally EMU's No. 3 hitter in the batting order, missed the trip because of academic commitments.
