Lucas Hits Two Of EMU's Four Homers In Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Royals showed a bit of everything in a softball sweep of Mary Baldwin Monday afternoon in Harrisonburg, extending their winning streak to nine in a row. EMU's women hit four homeruns while the pitching staff threw a pair of shutouts.

The women have now thrown four goose eggs in a row, and haven't allowed a run in 22 straight innings.

Eastern Mennonite improves to 11-3 as they prepare for their ODAC opener, a big test at No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.

EMU 8, Mary Baldwin 0 – 5 innings
The women scored twice in the first to grab the lead, and then took over in the second. Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) dumped a two-run homer over the wall in center before Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) unleashed a towering three-run shot down the left field line.

They added one more in the third to get the lead to eight and set up for a mercy-shortened ending.

Sophomore Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County), who was named ODAC Pitcher of the Week earlier in the afternoon, worked through an improving Mary Baldwin lineup, earning a 1-2-3 fifth to close out the win. She improved to 3-1.

Miller led an 11-hit attack by going 2-2 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in four. She hit her first homerun of the year. Danyele Smith (Broadway, Va./Broadway) was 2-3 with two runs. Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) and Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) each had a pair of hits as well.

EMU 8, Mary Baldwin 0 – 5 innings
The offense was held to just seven hits and two walks in the nightcap, but they utilized their chances and left just two runners on base. After scoring two unearned runs in the second, the big sticks again came around in the following inning.

Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led off the third with her second homerun of the year. After Hill laced an RBI double, Lucas again went long, this time ripping a three-run homer to left for a quick 7-0 lead.

EMU added one more in the fourth before Reath pitched a perfect fifth to improve to 5-2 with a two-hit shutout.

Lucas finished 2-2 with four RBIs. She now has four homeruns on the year. Sheets was 2-3 with an RBI and a run.

Even with the big winning streak, Coach JD McCurdy said his women are taking it one game at a time:
