Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The softball women are leaving South Carolina on a high note. After today's sweep of their final games at Fastpitch Dreams in North Myrtle Beach, the Royals are 7-3 and riding a five-game winning streak.
EMU now sits on a break until next Wednesday, when they get Southern Virginia at the 2016 home opener. First pitch on Gehman Field is 3:00pm.
EMU 21, Anna Maria 6 – 5 innings
The first inning started out with an offensive outburst from each team. Only the Royals could keep it up.
Eastern Mennonite's women batted through the order in each of the first four innings, and scored at least three runs in each at-bat. They banged out 25 hits, including 24 singles.
Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) went 3-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Danyele Smith (Broadway, Va./Broadway) also went 3-4, adding three runs and two RBIs. Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) and Tiffani Shaheen (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna County) each rapped three hits as well, with Shaheen scoring three times.
Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) drew her first collegiate start in the circle and got the win with 3.0 innings of work. Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) struck out five in 2.0 frames.
EMU 4, Hilbert 2
The women's second game of the day featured a much more traditional volume of scoring. EMU took the first lead with an unearned run on a passed ball in the second. They added another unearned run in the fourth to go up 2-0.
Smith led off the fifth with a double to trigger a small spurt. Miller then walked and Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) brought them both home with a two-out double.
The extra runs were needed when the Hawks rallied in the seventh, using a one-out triple to chase in two runs. But good defense ended the game with an unorthodox double play, as the Hilbert batter grounded out to short and the runner got cut down at home trying to score.
Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) finished 2-3 with two runs. Reath collected two RBIs on her only hit.
Pitcher Janna Williams (Kenbridge, Va./Kenston Forest) retired the first 16 batters she faced and improved to 2-0 with the complete game decision.
