Volleyball Men Stumble To No. 7 Stevenson

Box Score

For one set, EMU's volleyball men were right with No. 7 Stevenson.  The Mustangs never let up, however, and eventually took a 3-0 sweep from the men.

The Royals even up at 7-7 overall with loss, including 2-3 in the Continental Volleyball Conference.  They return to the court this weekend, hosting Marymount and Penn State-Altoona in a tri-match on Saturday.  Eastern Mennonite plays MU in a CVC date at 1:00pm followed by the Lions at 5:00pm.

Stevenson used a run midway through the first to get a four-point edge, which is where it stood at 22-18.  But the Royals took advantage of an SU service error to rattle off four in a row, tying the score at 22-22 on a kill from Scott Brigham (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry).

The Mustangs scored two in a row to get to set point, but EMU answered with two of their own to re-tie it.  The men fended off four set points but could never get over the hump.  Stevenson finally got back-to-back points to take the set, 29-27.

After trading the first few points in the second, the visitors used a 4-0 streak to build up a 13-7 lead.  The Royals could only get as close as three the rest of the way in a 25-16 loss.

Stevenson jumped to a quick 7-2 lead in the third, which effectively ended the set in another 25-16 final.

Eastern Mennonite hit .116 as a team, while the Mustangs made only 10 errors and hit .415.  SU also had 14 total blocks.

Brigham put down a match high 14 kills to go with six digs.  Travis Abele (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) landed 10 kills on just 18 swings.  Christian Taylor (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) set up 27 assists.  William Ragland (North Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) picked up nine digs.

Patrick Schuyler led Stevenson with 12 kills while Landon Shorts added 10.  Nate Ellis topped all players with seven blocks.

Coach Dominick Porter said his team needs to establish some consistency:
