Box Score 2 The volleyball men stepped back out of conference play Wednesday, playing at a tri-match hosted by Lancaster Bible College. The Royals grabbed a pair of sweeps, improving to 6-5. They return home for their next five contests, including four CVC dates, starting with matches against Cairn Friday night and nationally ranked Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
EMU 3, Wilson 0
The men rolled over Wilson, a new program playing in just their second match of the season. Eastern Mennonite was in firm control in each set, winning 25-10, 25-12 and 25-18.
The team hit .300, spearheaded by the middles. Joe Spriggs (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) had highs of nine kills, five blocks and five digs. Ben Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) put down seven kills on only nine swings. Travis Abele (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) added six kills and five digs. Setter Christian Taylor (Henrico, Va./Deep Run) had 25 assists.
EMU 3, Lancaster Bible 0
The Royals ended the night by taking on host LBC. The men jumped to a quick 8-3 lead and never let the Chargers closer than two points in a 25-16 opener. The second set was tight until EMU rattled off a 6-0 run. They won 25-17.
Lancaster Bible College took a quick 2-0 lead in the third set but the Royals answered with the next four points. They methodically tacked onto the lead before dropping a 5-0 streak for a 19-10 lead. EMU won 25-14.
The back line led the way, racking up 53 digs on LBC's 99 total attacks. As a result, the Chargers hit -.101. Abele and Colton Frey (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each had 11 digs, while William Ragland (North Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) added 10.
Ragland put down a match high nine kills. Abele had eight kills and Tim Callahan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added six. Taylor put up 29 assists.
