Box Score An upset was not in the cards in EMU's final home match of the season, as the volleyball women dropped a 3-0 decision to Emory & Henry College Wednesday night.
The Royals finish their ODAC slate at 2-9, while EHC stands in sole possession of fifth in the league standings at 6-4. Eastern Mennonite closes their year on the road Friday evening, playing a non-conference date at Gallaudet in Washington, D.C.
Already with their first double-digit-win season since 2009 at 10-18, a win against Gallaudet could push the Royals to their first 11-win season since 2007. That is the high-water mark of victories for the program since going 14-13 in 2001.
EMU scored the first points on Wednesday, but the Wasps used a 7-1 run to take over. The visitors held a small margin before pulling away late for a 25-18 opener. The women wouldn't get closer than one point in a 25-22 final. Coach Carrie Bert used the third to work in some off her younger players as Emory & Henry ran away, 25-11.
Senior Becca Hardy (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had eight kills and no errors on 15 attacks in her final match in Yoder Arena. Classmate Kait Miller (Sellersville, Pa./Christopher Dock) added four kills and each of the women also had a block.
The Royals ran a 6-2 offense in the contest, with Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) dishing out 14 assists and Erin Mays (Ridgeway, Va./Westover Christian Academy) putting up 11. Libero Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) led all players with 14 digs.
Kennady Thomason and Ali Singleton each had nine kills for Emory & Henry, while senior Tristen Pennington put down seven kills to become the Wasps' career kills leader with 973.
Coach Bert said her team earned a handful of unexpected wins en route to hitting the 10-win plateau:
