Box Score EMU's volleyball women came home from Randolph College Thursday night with a disappointing 3-1 loss, eliminating them from contention for a postseason tourney bid. The Royals (9-16 / 2-8 ODAC) won the first set before dropping three straight.
The women head to Carlisle, Pa., this Saturday afternoon for a non-conference tri-match against Ursinus and the host Red Devils.
Eastern Mennonite jumped on Randolph (4-19 / 2-8 ODAC) from the first serve, with Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) landing a pair of aces during a match-opening 11-0 run. The Royals kept the margin around 11 for much of the set before rolling to a 25-17 win.
The teams traded runs in the second, including back-to-back 5-0 runs early on. But a second 5-0 run for the WildCats gave them a 19-13 lead, triggering an 11-2 streak to finish a 25-15 decision.
EMU had a 5-0 run to gain an 11-7 edge in the third. They held the lead until a 3-0 jab from Randolph finally flipped the lead at 19-18. The WildCats then finished a 25-21 score with three straight points.
The Royals led by as many as five points in the fourth, including at 19-14. Randolph then struck a 5-0 streak to lock up the score at 19-19. The teams traded points, and a kill from Janna Williams (Kenbridge, Va./Kenston Forest) had the women within 23-22, but a pair of EMU errors closed the night in a 25-22 WildCat decision.
The women hit .133 as a team, their highest total since their last win, an Oct. 1 match against Guilford. Maria Yoder (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) landed 14 kills, her second-highest total of the season. Williams and Meredith Stinnette (Lynch Station, Va./Altavista) were also in double figures, each with 11. Jasmine Johnson had 37 assists, 11 digs and three aces.
Libero Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) led all players with 20 digs while Ginny Sorrell (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) picked up 10. Becca Hardy (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had a match-high four blocks, including two solo.
Autumn Troxell led Randolph with 12 kills and 15 digs. Alex Mariona added 10 kills.
