Men's Volleyball

Solid Win By Royals Bumps Record To 2-2

Box Score

EMU's volleyball men wrapped up their season-opening home stand with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Lancaster Bible College Wednesday night in Harrisonburg.  The Royals were able to work their entire bench into the contest as they improve to 2-2.

The men play their next nine on the road, including at King (Tn.) on Friday and Lees-McRae on Saturday.  A decision on if and how the impending Winter Storm Jonas affects those matches will be made Thursday.

Eastern Mennonite jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set against the Chargers and never looked back in a 25-11 final.

The second set was closer until the Royals unleashed a 7-1 run to go ahead 20-13.  After an LBC streak, the men finished things off with a 4-1 surge to win 25-18.

A strong start to the third gave EMU an 8-3 lead, but the Chargers eventually tied it up at 14-14.  The Royals scored the next two to keep in front and trigger an 11-4 run to finish, winning 25-18.

The men hit a season high .333 led by nine kills from Tim Callahan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin).  Hunter Taylor (Richmond, Va./Patrick Henry) smacked seven kills with a .500 attack percentage and added four aces.  Travis Abele (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) played setter for the match and tossed up 26 assists.

They also racked up 10.5 blocks as a team.  Ben Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) had five stuffs in just two sets, while Joe Spriggs (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) and William Ragland (North Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) each added four.  Ragland and Colton Frey (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each had six digs.

Kasey Gentry led LBC with 11 kills.

Coach Dominick Porter explains his plans for the match as well as for the upcoming road swing:
