Box Score EMU's volleyball men wrapped up their season-opening home stand with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Lancaster Bible College Wednesday night in Harrisonburg. The Royals were able to work their entire bench into the contest as they improve to 2-2.
The men play their next nine on the road, including at King (Tn.) on Friday and Lees-McRae on Saturday. A decision on if and how the impending Winter Storm Jonas affects those matches will be made Thursday.
Eastern Mennonite jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set against the Chargers and never looked back in a 25-11 final.
The second set was closer until the Royals unleashed a 7-1 run to go ahead 20-13. After an LBC streak, the men finished things off with a 4-1 surge to win 25-18.
A strong start to the third gave EMU an 8-3 lead, but the Chargers eventually tied it up at 14-14. The Royals scored the next two to keep in front and trigger an 11-4 run to finish, winning 25-18.
The men hit a season high .333 led by nine kills from Tim Callahan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). Hunter Taylor (Richmond, Va./Patrick Henry) smacked seven kills with a .500 attack percentage and added four aces. Travis Abele (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) played setter for the match and tossed up 26 assists.
They also racked up 10.5 blocks as a team. Ben Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) had five stuffs in just two sets, while Joe Spriggs (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) and William Ragland (North Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) each added four. Ragland and Colton Frey (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each had six digs.
Kasey Gentry led LBC with 11 kills.
