Box Score There were plenty of chances for both teams before EMU fell to Marymount in overtime Sunday afternoon. The Saints claimed a 2-1 OT decision in Fredericksburg as part of the UMW Soccer Classic.
The loss ended a disappointing weekend for the Royals, who came home with a pair of one-goal losses, including Saturday's 1-0 loss to host Mary Washington.
It took only five minutes of action for a shot on goal, as EMU's Jon Bishop (Blooming Glen, Pa./Christopher Dock) had a shot saved by Marymount's keeper. Each team had a pair of attempts before MU got on the board with a score from Brandon Orozco in the 22nd minute.
Freshman Jackson Taylor (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) entered the contest in the 38th minute, and it took a mere minute for him to score his first collegiate goal. Taylor scored with an assist from Dylan Polley (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) to knot things up at 1-1.
Despite all the shots from the first half, neither team scored in the second. Even with EMU's starters returning to the field for a push over the final 15 minutes of regulation, that stretch featured more fouls than shots.
That all changed in overtime. The Royals started out with a head of steam. Dominic Powers (Culpeper, Va./Fiesta Valley) nearly won it less than two minutes in, but had back-to-back shots stopped. The men took a total of four stabs at the net over the opening five minutes before a dramatic change. Marymount made a quick surge and ended up with a corner kick. At the 6:02 mark of OT, the Saints scored off the corner, getting the game-winner from Rodney Ngoh.
Eastern Mennonite had a 17-11 advantage in shots, including 7-6 on goal. Taylor had a team high three attempts as he, Bishop and Powers each put two attempts on target.
Matthew Overacker (Mount Crawford, Va./Turner Ashby) made four saves for the Royals.
The men get just a couple of days to lick their wounds, hitting the road again on Wednesday for a night game at Gettysburg. EMU's first home game of 2015 is Saturday afternoon against Ferrum.
