Box Score 2 For the second weekend in a row, the volleyball women split a tri-match. EMU's women romped to a sweep over West Virginia Tech Saturday in Emory, Va., but dropped an ODAC match to open the day, which also repeated last week's performance.
The Royals have now won three of their last four matches to sit at 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. They are back home this coming week, hosting Roanoke in an ODAC contest on Wednesday before welcoming non-conference opponent North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday.
Emory & Henry 3, EMU 1
The women really struggled coming off the long ride to host Emory & Henry, hitting .000 and -.077 in the first two sets. They let a late 19-16 lead slip away in the first, losing 25-20, before fading late in second, 25-19.
The offense suddenly came alive in the third set, triggering a 9-1 run to build a 17-9 lead. Eastern Mennonite forced a fourth set by winning 25-20.
But the Wasps regrouped, scoring five in a row to break off an 11-11 tie. EMU never got closer than four after that, losing 25-18.
Led by their middles, the Royals finished with a respectable .101 attack percentage. Maria Yoder (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) set a new career best with a match high 12 kills along with three blocks. Becca Hardy (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had 10 kills and four blocks. Setter Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) had 43 assists.
Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) had 15 digs, while Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) added 14 digs and three blocks.
Kate Franklin led EHC with 11 kills. Kennady Thomason landed 10 kills with seven blocks.
EMU 3, West Virginia Tech 0
Eastern Mennonite was in complete control against the Golden Bears. They jumped to a 9-2 lead and added a 12-point streak on their way to a 25-14 win.
Sam Jacob's serving triggered another big run in the second, this time 8-0, which opened up a 14-7 lead. WVU Tech couldn't string more than two points together as EMU won 25-15.
In the third, the teams were tied at 13-13 before a 3-0 run gave the Royals some breathing room. They never gave up the lead and closed on a 5-2 push to win, 25-19.
Coach Carrie Bert got 15 of her players on the court during the win over the Golden Bears. Junior Kait Miller (Sellersville, Pa./Christopher Dock) set a career best with eight kills. Skyler Johnson added seven kills and nine digs. Erin Mays (Ridgeway, Va./Westover Christian) had 16 set assists.
Katie Miller led defensively with 17 digs, while Hardy had five blocks.
