Box Score The chances were there, just not the results, as visiting Virginia Wesleyan scored a goal in each half to get by EMU Wednesday night in Harrisonburg by a final of 2-0. The Royals will be looking to snap their second three-game losing skid when they host Lebanon Valley College Saturday night in a non-conference match.
Virginia Wesleyan got on the board just over 10 minutes in, scoring on a corner. Keeper Matthew Overacker (Mount Crawford, Va./Turner Ashby) punched out the initial corner, but the ball was picked up by VWC's Travis Walke who pounded it back past Overacker for a goal.
The Royals controlled the opening stretch of the second half, earning a corner and taking three shots in the first six minutes, but they couldn't find the net. Play balanced out and the Marlins added the insurance goal on a counterattack. Ryan Kraus found a long punt from his keeper and touched it to the net in a collision with Overacker.
The sudden score put EMU down 2-0, and momentarily took some wind out of their sails. EMU's soccer men regrouped for a strong finish, despite being left on nil.
The Marlins had a slight 18-16 advantage in shots, including 9-5 on goal. Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) had six attempts while Dominic Powers (Culpeper, Va./Fiesta Valley) added four. Each put two on goal.
Overacker finished with seven saves.
EMU falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
