Box Score 2 Entering the day tied with host Randolph-Macon for sixth place in the ODAC standings, EMU's softball women dropped a pair to the Yellow Jackets in Ashland. Eastern Mennonite sits at 13-9 overall and 6-8 in the league, clinging to seventh place.
Randolph-Macon 7, EMU 3
The Royals got a leadoff single in each of the first two innings, yet it was R-MC who jumped to a 5-0 lead after three.
Eastern Mennonite scored an unearned run in the fourth, but the Yellow Jackets plated two more in the bottom of the sixth. Nicolette Cuevas (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) shot a two-run homer out to left center in the seventh before the rally ended.
The women managed six hits and nobody had more than one. Cuevas had the only two RBIs. Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) and Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) each scored a run.
Lauren Campbell (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) started in the circle and was chased after giving up three runs while getting just one out. She took the loss.
Randolph-Macon 9, EMU 4
After giving up a pair of homers in the first game, the Royals served up four more in the nightcap. Homeruns in each of the first two innings gave the Yellow Jackets a 5-0 lead.
Cuevas led off the third with a double and eventually scored on an RBI single from Vivian Maddox (Rustburg, Va./Brookville). But a double play ball helped squelch the rally. R-MC got the run back on a solo shot in the third, and then made it 7-1 with a single run in the fourth.
Freshman Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) smashed a two-run homerun to center in the fifth, as her first collegiate longball made it 7-3.
Another two-run blast for the Yellow Jackets in the sixth bumped the margin back up to six runs. The Royals rallied in the seventh, loading the bases with one away. An RBI groundout brought in one run before a strikeout ended the game.
Johnson finished 2-2 with a walk at the plate, including her two-run homer. Cuevas batted 2-3 with two runs, while Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was also 2-3 with one run scored.
Jordan Aylor (Madison, Va./Madison County) took the loss, giving up seven of the runs in 3.0+ innings of work.
EMU returns home on Saturday, hosting Randolph College in their final home date of the season. The Royals will celebrate both Seniors and Parents Recognition during the doubleheader.
