Box Score EMU's volleyball men suffered a tough CVC loss Wednesday night, dropping a straight sets decision to Stevenson. The Royals slip to 2-5 in the conference, while SU tightens their grip on third place at 5-2. Eastern Mennonite had their four-match winning streak snapped as they fall to 9-6 overall.
The teams traded points in the opener, and stood locked at 17-17. But the Mustangs scored six unanswered and carried the momentum to a 25-20 win.
EMU earned an early 4-1 lead in the second set before Stevenson took over. The visitors controlled the net, especially on the defensive side, and closed on an 18-5 run to win 25-13.
The Royals again worked to an early lead in the third, but they could never get a run on SU. The Mustangs had their first shot at match point at 24-23, before a service error tied it up at 24-24. But a block and a kill ended things quickly for Stevenson in a 26-24 closer.
Eastern Mennonite had more errors than kills in the first two sets and finished at -.034 for the contest. SU had 13.0 blocks. Scott Brigham (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) led all players with 13 kills, but Marc Lovell (Newport News, Va./Menchville) was the only other Royal to hit positive, getting two kills on seven swings. Zach Guiciardi (Creighton, Pa./Deer Lakes) had 24 assists.
Brigham added 11 digs and Dan Lutz (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) had two blocks.
Serving was a strong point for the Royals, as they had eight aces compared to just three errors. Brigham had four aces and Lovell added two.
Michael Fehrs led Stevenson with 11 kills. Alex Klunk had eight kills and seven blocks, while Nate Ellis added seven kills and six blocks.
