Box Score Eastern Mennonite made it four straight sweeps Friday night, rolling over Bluefield College in non-conference action in Harrisonburg. The volleyball men improve to 9-5 with their fourth consecutive 3-0 win.
The Royals now return to Continental Volleyball Conference play, hosting Stevenson on Wednesday in Yoder Arena. The Mustangs sit third in the CVC at 4-2 and beat EMU 3-1 on Feb. 11 in Owings Mills, Md. Eastern Mennonite is in fifth at 2-4. Start time in Yoder Arena is 7:00pm.
In Friday's match, the men jumped ahead quickly, rattling off six straight for a 7-1 lead. Bluefield regrouped behind some strong net play and got within 13-11, but the Royals ended on a 12-4 run to win 25-15.
Eastern Mennonite again used a big run in the second to blow open an 8-4 lead. They never let up this time, getting another 25-15 win.
The Rams inched to a 5-4 lead in the third set before EMU scored seven in a row for an 11-5 lead. The visitors never recovered and Scott Brigham (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) dropped in his match high 15th kill to seal the sweep, 25-17.
The Royals hit .308 as a team, their second highest total of the year. Brigham pounded out his 15 kills with a .400 attack mark and led the team in the back row with eight digs. Tim Callahan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) also swung at .400, landing nine kills in two sets. Zach Guiciardi (Creighton, Pa./Deer Lakes) put up 25 assists in two sets, while Russell Long (Hampton, Va./Bethel) added nine from the first set.
EMU dropped in 11 service aces for the third consecutive match, led by three from Justin Spanka (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem). The Royals were perfect in serve receive, not allowing Bluefield any aces.
