Box Score After a CVC-opening win Friday night at Cairn, the Eastern Mennonite volleyball men picked up their first league loss of the year, falling 3-0 Rutgers-Newark. A new team to the CVC this year after transitioning down from D-I, the Scarlet Raiders were in complete control on their home court.
The Royals worked to a quick lead in the first set and were still close with a 14-13 deficit. But Rutgers-Newark closed on an 11-3 tear to win 25-16. Sets two and three had similar stories, with EMU hanging around before the home team worked out to a lead midway through. Scores were 25-13 and 25-20.
Eastern Mennonite hit .109 as a team and had 10 service errors, leaving them unable to keep up with a Scarlet Raider squad which hit an unbelievable .478.
Dan Lutz (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) was the most efficient attacker, knocking down five kills with no errors on nine swings. Tim Callahan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had four kills with a .375 attack mark from the outside. Scott Brigham (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) had a team high six kills but also eight attack errors.
Marc Lovell (Newport News, Va./Menchville) had five kills and added six assists as the setter in the third set. Zach Guiciardi (Creighton, Pa./Deer Lakes) lofted 15 assists. Middle Joe Spriggs (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) added a team best three blocks.
After having their three-match winning streak snapped, the Royals will take a 4-2 overall record into Wednesday's road date at Stevenson in Owings Mills, Md.
