Box Score Being in control of a game doesn't always mean you win. The Royals were reminded of that Wednesday night at Shenandoah, where the soccer men dominated much of play, especially both overtime sessions, but settled for a 1-1 tie.
Despite having more shots on goal throughout regulation, the Royals suddenly found themselves down when Nate Long scored in the 82nd minute to give SU a 1-0 lead. The men stuck with it, however, and soon found the equalizer.
Picking the best time for his first career goal, senior defender Seth Suttles (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) scored with just 5:26 remaining, getting an assist from Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) to send the game into OT. Suttles fired a tough angled shot from the right side after a through ball from Luna.
Eastern Mennonite carried the momentum into the extra time and had a handful of good scoring chances. Luna had a shot saved in the 94th minute, and the rebounded attempt from Derek Harnish (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) went high. Dylan Polley (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) ripped a great shot from the top of the box in the second OT, but SU's keeper made a diving save before the defense cleared the ball. And a minute later, Luna sent a free kick from outside the box over the goal.
In the end, the Royals finished with a 23-12 advantage in shots, including 9-1 in extra time. Luna ripped seven attempts, with four on goal. Polley had two on target shots.
Daniel Nyce (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) made a pair of saves in net.
EMU moves to 3-8-1 with the tie, including 1-2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The men host Randolph College on Saturday as part of Homecoming. Game time with the ODAC's second-place team is at 4:00pm.
