Troyer's Saves Hold Back Yellow Jackets' Attack

Box Score

In a game packed with a combined 53 shots, the final tally was surprisingly low as EMU's field hockey women suffered a 3-0 loss at Randolph-Macon Monday afternoon.  The result knocked the Royals from the playoff hunt, as they fell a full two games behind the sixth-place Yellow Jackets with just one game remaining on the calendar.

Only the top six teams advance to the ODAC Tournament in field hockey.  The women wrap up their year Thursday night at defending ODAC champion Lynchburg College.

The Royals had the first good scoring chance in Monday's rescheduled game, peppering three close-range shots in the fourth minute.  Each were stopped by R-MC's goalie, however, and the Yellow Jackets started to gain control.

Kaitee Nicholas put the home team on the board in the 12th minute, but goalie Kelsey Troyer (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) kept it close by saving six attempts in a two-minute span.  Melissa Cox (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) nearly equalized in the 23rd minute, but had back-to-back shots stopped, one by the goalie and the other by a defender.

Randolph-Macon gained some breathing room seconds later on a quick counterattack, notching a goal from Rachel Gist.  The Yellow Jackets held off EMU until making it 3-0 with a score from Haley McMahon early in the second, which proved to be the final score.

The Royals took 13 shots, which was their highest game total since Sept. 21 and third-highest total of the year.  Seven were on target, including three box Cox.  Emily Musselman (Telford, Pa./Souderton) put two swings on goal.

Troyer had arguably the best performance of her career, racking up 22 saves in between the pipes.  It was the highest individual total in recent history.  Mary Beth Danaher had 21 of the team's 22 saves in a game against Christopher Newport in 2013.  Martha Walker owns the EMU record with 32 saves in a game against Bloomsburg in 1986.
