Box Score 2 EMU's volleyball women dropped both ends of a tri-match hosted by Washington and Lee on Saturday. The Royals fell in a sweep to the powerful Generals before letting a five-setter against William Peace slip through their fingers.
The women are now 9-12 on the season, including 2-7 in ODAC play. They come home on Wednesday for their final home match of the season, hosting Lynchburg College on Senior Recognition Night.
After losing their last four matches, the Royals are still searching for just their third double-digit win season since 2003.
Washington and Lee 3, EMU 0
Despite improving each set against the Generals, the Royals fell in a quick hole with 25-4 and 25-14 losses. EMU led 11-10 and 14-13 in the third, but W&L closed on a 12-4 run to win 25-18.
Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) had eight kills to lead the women. Setter Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) had 17 assists and seven digs.
William Peace 3, EMU 2
The Royals ended their day with a great battle against a good William Peace team. EMU led by as many as five points in the opener, but needed a kill and a block to seal a 26-24 win.
The Pacers jumped ahead 12-4 in the second but the women used two big runs to grab the lead back at 18-17. Back-to-back kills from Janna Williams (Kenbridge, Va./Kenston Forest) had EMU up 22-21, before William Peace closed on a 4-1 spurt to win 25-23.
Game three was characterized by the teams trading runs. EMU had the final one, with a 4-1 streak giving the Royals a 25-21 edge.
William Peace geared up for the fourth, blowing a 12-11 lead into a 25-16 win.
The final set was a wild one. WPU scored the first three points before Eastern Mennonite exploded to an 11-6 cushion. The women still led 13-9 before the cushion deflated and the Pacers rattled off a 7-1 streak to steal a 16-14 decision.
Amy Nussbaum (Union, Mich./White Pigeon) easily had her best career effort, leading all players with 16 kills. Williams was right behind her with 14 kills, while Skyler Johnson had 11 and 15 digs. Jasmine Johnson racked up 51 assists.
Maria Yoder (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) had four blocks and four service aces. Alena Yoder (Elkhart, Ind./Bethany Christian) picked up 18 digs, while libero Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) led the team with 22 pick-ups. For Miller, the big effort vaulted her from No. 10 to No. 8 on the ODAC's Career Digs lists. The senior has 1,649 over her four seasons, and she jumped Lynchburg's Corri Pfister (1,629) and Savannah Tinsley (1,640) on her way to No. 8.
