Box Score Lynchburg proved a tough place to play Saturday afternoon, as EMU's soccer men missed on their few chances and came home on the short end of a 2-0 decision. The Royals move to 1-4-2 in the ODAC, while LC stepped into fourth place in the league's standings at 3-1-3.
The Hornets struck quickly, getting a goal from Fredy Flores in the 12th minute to take the lead.
Eastern Mennonite nearly equalized just after the restart. On their first push up the field, Dave Drafton (Alexandria, Va./Howard Gardner) put a ball past the LC keeper, but a defender cleared it off the line. Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) ripped a shot off the rebound but it was wide.
Then after a corner in the 21st minute, Emmanuel Boamah (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) had back-to-back shots saved by Lynchburg. Jonathan Bush (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) added another saved attempt four minutes later, but the Royals simply couldn't get into the net.
Those seemed to be the best chances for EMU. The Hornets dominated the second half and eventually added an insurance goal from Ben Grossfuss in the 82nd minute for the 2-0 final.
EMU had seven of their nine shots in the first half. Daniel Nyce (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) stayed busy in front of the goal, making 11 saves for his second double-digit effort over the past three games.
With a strong push over the final two weeks, the Royals can still move into the eight-team ODAC Tournament field. They play three of four games at home, starting with Wednesday's tilt against Randolph-Macon, which is tied with LC for fourth in the ODAC standings.
