W&L Downs Field Hockey Women On Homecoming

Box Score

In front of their Homecoming crowd, EMU's field hockey women played a good game but came up on the short end of a 4-0 decision to Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg.  Despite the loss, the Royals showed continued improvement against one of the ODAC's top teams.

The Generals snuck in an early goal, poking in a rebounded shot in the fourth minute.  Eastern Mennonite battled evenly until the second half, when W&L got another rebounded putback for a 2-0 lead in the 41st minute.

Freshman goalie Kelsey Troyer (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made a handful of nice saves to keep the game close, but the Generals added two more for the final margin.  Offensively, the women strung together a few nice possessions but had their attacks thwarted by W&L's back line.

Troyer racked up 17 saves in the game.  Senior Melissa Cox (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) ended up with the Royals' only shot.

Cox and defender Brianna Kauffman (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) were honored before the game for Senior Recognition.  Cox is a four-year starter, while Kauffman has started for three of her four seasons.

Eastern Mennonite (2-9 / 0-2 ODAC) is in the middle a five-game home string.  They host Roanoke College Tuesday night in an important contest for ODAC positioning.

Coach E.A. Jackson talks about her team's play against W&L, as well as what her seniors have meant this year:
