Box Score In a battle of offense against defense, the offense won. Unfortunately for the EMU volleyball women, they were playing the defense card.
Randolph College, which entered the night second in the ODAC with a .238 attack percentage, hit even better than advertised as they swept past the Royals Tuesday night in Lynchburg, 3-0. Eastern Mennonite, conversely, came in tops in the ODAC with 17.14 digs per set, but couldn't patch together enough offense to balance things out.
The WildCats earn their first conference win of the year with the decision, while EMU slides to 0-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and 5-12 overall.
Randolph scored the first three points in the first set and never gave up the lead in a 25-13 final. The Royals scored first in the second, and a kill from Kaitlin Miller (Sellersville, Pa./Christopher Dock) gave them a 5-1 lead. RC answered with the next six points, however, to jump in front. The teams traded swings before another kill from Miller trimmed the home team's lead to 15-14. But an 8-0 run delivered the knockout blow in a 25-15 decision.
It looked like the women had settled down in set three, as they had three kills in a 5-1 run which tied the score at 19-19. But Randolph had one final run, scoring four straight to take control and roll to a 25-20 win.
The WildCats' offense dominated the match with a .319 attack percentage. EMU hit just .064.
Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) had a team best 14 digs. Setter Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) had 21 assists and eight digs. Sara Ritchie (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) and Regan Cook (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) each had six kills.
EMU has a short break in action until their next match, a non-conference date at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, Pa., next week Monday.
