Box Score Two-time defending ODAC champion Washington and Lee was too much for EMU Friday night, taking down the Royals 3-0 in Lexington. The volleyball women had one of their better blocking matches of the year, but couldn't muster the offense to upset the ODAC's top team.
Eastern Mennonite is right back in action Saturday morning, playing at Shenandoah in another ODAC battle. Start time in Winchester is set for 11:00am.
The Royals started well against W&L, with Regan Cook (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) knocking a kill to cap an early 5-0 run for a 9-4 lead. The Generals quickly answered to tie the score, but EMU rebuilt the lead at 18-15. The home team responded with four straight points to teeter totter back into the lead, and slowly pulled away for a 25-22 win.
After the Royals scored the first two points in the second set, Washington and Lee answered with an 8-1 run. The women fought back to within three points before succumbing 25-18.
Each team had sizeable runs in the third set, but the Generals took control with another 8-1 run and cruised to a 25-20 clincher.
Eastern Mennonite finished with a total of six blocks, which was just one off their season high. But the offense hit just .010. Becca Hardy (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had three blocks, including one solo stuff, to go with her team high 10 kills. Kayla Smeltzer (Richmond, Va./Maggie L. Walker) had three block assists and five kills. Sara Ritchie (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) had seven kills.
Setter Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) lofted 21 assists to go with seven digs. Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) had a team best nine digs while Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) added eight.
The Royals' record settles at 5-10 after the loss, including 0-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
