Box Score The EMU soccer men suffered a disappointing start to the 2014 campaign Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Mary Washington on a last-second goal. The Royals must regroup quickly as they turn around to take on Marymount Saturday at 5:00pm as part of the UMW Soccer Classic in Fredericksburg, Va.
The host Eagles out-shot Eastern Mennonite 12-1 in the first half and jumped to a lead with a goal in the fourth minute.
The score remained 1-0 for more than 70 minutes until the Royals notched an equalizer. Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) hit the net in his first EMU game, getting as assist from Issac Peglow (Milroy, Pa./Indian Valley).
But the draw was not to be, as the Eagles won it on a laser beam shot with just four seconds left in the second half, clinching the 2-1 decision.
The Royals managed just three shots on goal in the loss. Luna had the one that found net, with Joao Downs (Limon, Costa Rica/Colegio de Limon Diurno) and Jake Lind (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) each also putting one on target.
Freshman Matthew Overacker (Mount Crawford, Va./Turner Ashby) got the start in goal and made eight saves.
