Box Score 2 After a week's worth of rescheduling efforts, the EMU softball women ended up in Newport News on Sunday, playing a doubleheader at No. 20 Christopher Newport. The young Royals made improvements throughout the day, but still came home with a pair of losses to CNU.
Both teams had been scheduled to play each other at a weekend softball bash in Salisbury, Md., which was snowed out. They had rescheduled for another bash in Salem, Va., only to have snow cancel that event as well.
Eastern Mennonite is now 3-7 as they prepare for their home and ODAC opener Thursday afternoon against Shenandoah University.
Christopher Newport 9, EMU 1 – 5 innings
The Captains jumped on top in game one with four runs in the bottom of the first. The Royals chipped into the lead with a two-out unearned run in the third, but CNU got it right back in the bottom of the frame.
The women went down in order in the fourth and the fifth, and the Captains tacked in four more runs to end the contest on the mercy rule.
Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) had half of EMU's hits as she went 2-2 with an RBI. Brooke Sigrist (Crimora, Va./Fort Defiance) and Molly Smith (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) had the other hits.
Jordan Aylor (Madison, Va./Madison County) allowed seven runs over 3.1 innings to take the loss. Lauren Campbell (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) gave up the final two runs in 0.2 innings of work.
Christopher Newport 4, EMU 3
The nightcap was much more competitive, ending with a walk-off hit. CNU again scored first, plating a pair of two-out, unearned runs in the second.
The Royals tied things up in the fifth, combining four hits with a CNU error to bring in two runs. The women then took their first lead at 3-2 in the sixth when Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) led off with a single and ended up beating a throw home to score with one out.
Christopher Newport tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame with a pair of infield singles and a squeeze play. The Captains then got a leadoff double in the seventh and grabbed the walk-off win with a sinking single to center field to plate the fourth run.
Each team had 10 hits in the even game. Smith was 3-4 with an RBI, while Lucas was 2-2 with a walk. Brooke Hensley (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) also had a pair of hits with a stolen base.
Cara Neikirk (Salem, Va./Glenvar) pitched the entire game and suffered the loss. Only two of the four runs were earned.
