Volleyball Men Steam Through York Invitational To Claim Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

The EMU volleyball men have caught fire, winning all four of their matches at this weekend's York College Men's Volleyball Invitational in Jamaica, N.Y.  The Royals took three victories in straight sets to claim the invitational's title over Lasell based on tie-breakers.

Quentin Moore (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) was named the MVP of the All-Tournament Team, while Zach Guiciardi (Creighton, Pa./Deer Lakes) was named the libero for the All-Tournament Team.

Eastern Mennonite has now won five matches in a row to improve to 10-9 overall.  The Royals have 10 days off before playing at Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday, Mar. 18.

EMU 3, Lancaster Bible 2
The men opened their play on Friday, winning a crazy back-and-forth battle with LBC.  The Chargers snuck wins in games one and three by 25-23 and 25-20 scores.  EMU dominated games two and four, 25-11 and 25-8.  Fittingly, the fifth game turned into a battle which went extra points before the Royals won, 18-16.

Moore hammered out 26 kills to go with five block assists.  Jesse Reist (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) had 12 kills.  Kyle Storc (Columbus, Oh./Bishop Watterson) had seven kills with no errors on 11 attempts, while also putting down eight blocks.

Matt Dolan (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) had 52 set assists.  Guiciardi put up eight digs.

EMU 3, York 0
The Royals had been scheduled to wrap up the classic with the host Cardinals, but due to another team getting stuck in New York traffic, the match was swapped into Friday's 8:30pm slot.  EMU responded well, using an 8-1 run to grab momentum and a 25-20 win in game one.

A massive 11-0 run in game two provided a 25-16 win.  The third game stayed tight before EMU scored three straight to break off a 21-21 tie, as they took a 25-23 win.

The men hit .279 while hampering York to just .065.  Moore had 17 kills and a .424 attack percentage to go with seven digs.  Reist added 11 kills while Dolan had 31 assists.  Storc had five blocks.

EMU 3, Polytechnic 0
On Saturday, the men started by rolling over NYU-Poly in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-11.

The Royals hit a whopping .548 as a team, with the balanced attack led by 10 from Reist.  Moore added nine, while Storc had six kills on just seven swings to go with eight blocks.

Dolan had 11 set assists, while Guiciardi led the team with 10 digs.  EMU also had 11 service aces, with Reist charting four and Moore landing three.

EMU 3, New Jersey City 0
The match with the Gothic Knights was tight, but the men seemed to get the big plays when they needed them.  NJCU served for game point twice in game one, before Moore hammered down three straight kills to steal a 27-25 decision.

Each team had their chances at game point in the second, with the Royals finally getting a break and winning 30-28 thanks to a bad set.  Eastern Mennonite had the momentum by that point, and an early 5-0 run snowballed to a 25-14 win in game three.

Moore again led the way with 19 kills and 11 digs.  Dolan had 36 assists and four blocks.  Garrett Delph (Berryville, Va./Leesburg Christian) added three blocks.
