Box Score 2 The EMU volleyball men wrapped up their final road trip of the year with a pair of losses Saturday afternoon in Langhorne, Pa. The Royals dropped a four-set decision to host Cairn University before losing in three to No. 8 Stevens.
Cairn 3, EMU 1
The Royals fell into an early hole in game one and could never get back to even in a 25-18 loss. They fell behind in game two as well, but closed on a monster 12-2 run to even the match with a 25-18 decision.
The Highlanders returned to game one form in taking a 25-20 win in the key third game, and then closed the day on a 9-2 run for a 25-15 clincher.
Eastern Mennonite hit .160 compared to .234 for Cairn. Scott Brigham (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) hit a career high 22 kills with 11 digs. Jesse Reist (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) had a double double as well with 13 kills and 12 digs. Marc Lovell (Newport News, Va./Menchville) added seven kills and 11 digs. Setter Zach Guiciardi (Creighton, Pa./Deer Lakes) put up 40 assists.
Garrett Delph (Berryville, Va./Leesburg Christian) had five blocks while Kyle Storc (Columbus, Oh./Bishop Watterson) put up three.
No. 8 Stevens 3, EMU 0
EMU played catch-up to the nationally-ranked Ducks all day, taking losses of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-16. The men hit just .118 and managed only three blocks.
Brigham again hit double figures with 12 kills to go with eight digs. Reist had six kills. Guiciardi put up 29 assists, while middle hitter Joe Spriggs (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) had five kills and two blocks.
The Royals, 11-14 overall and 1-8 in the conference, close the year at home on Wednesday, hosting new CVC opponent Marymount. Game time in Yoder Arena is 7:00pm.
