Box Score The EMU volleyball picked up a crucial win Saturday afternoon, sweeping Cairn University in Harrisonburg. The Royals broke a five-game losing streak with the decision, and also earned their first Continental Volleyball Conference decision of the season.
The men's offense was in high gear all day, never hitting below .333 in a single game and finishing with a season high clip of .393. Combined with 18 blocks on the defensive side, EMU was hard to stop.
Eastern Mennonite took a lead midway through the first game, then broke off a 25-25 tie with two straight points for a 27-25 decision. The Royals held a small edge in game two before a 7-0 explosion gave them a big lead en route to a 25-19 win. The men surged to a 15-10 lead in game three, then held on a for a 25-23 clincher.
Quentin Moore (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) had 19 kills on 30 swings, coming in with a .500 attack percentage. Jesse Reist (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) wasn't far behind with 13 kills and seven digs. Setter Matt Dolan (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) had 41 assists in the sweep.
Kyle Storc (Columbus, Oh./Bishop Watterson) had five blocks and fellow middle Garrett Delph (Berryville, Va./Leesburg Christian) had four. Libero Zach Guiciardi (Creighton, Pa./Deer Lakes) added seven digs.
Now 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the CVC, the men have a few days off before heading on a long road trip. The Royals play a CVC match at Marymount in Arlington, Va., on Wednesday, then head up to New York for five more matches over next weekend.
