Women Get Hits But Leave Runners On In Losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Eastern Mennonite softball team had their bats working again on Sunday, combining for 15 hits over two games at the 3 n 2 Elite Event in Atlanta, Ga., but they only managed to score three runs in suffering another pair of losses.  The women lost to host Emory in the morning before dropped a tight match with Greensboro in the afternoon.

No. 12 Emory 7, EMU 2
The Royals fared much better against the Eagles on day two of the event, out-hitting the nationally ranked team 9-7.  They had runners reach in all but one of their at-bats, but left 10 runners on base.

EMU left the bases loaded in the top of the first, before Emory jumped ahead with a three spot in the bottom of the frame.  Molly Smith (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) and Jordan Aylor (Madison, Va./Madison County) hit homers in the third and fourth, respectively, trimming the deficit to 4-2.  The Eagles then plated three more in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-2 edge and the Royals left two more runners on in the seventh to end the game.

Smith led the offense by going 3-4 with EMU's first homerun of the year.  Aylor finished 2-3 with a longball.  Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) singled and walked twice.

Freshman Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) pitched the entire game in her first collegiate outing.  She gave up only seven hits, but walked nine batters.

Greensboro 4, EMU 1
The Pride jumped ahead of the women with two runs in the top of the third, but the Royals cut that lead in half in the fourth.  Foltz led off by reaching on an error, and eventually scored on a double steal attempt.

Greensboro used extra base hits to score single runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings, while the women left runners on base in each of their final three tries.

Miller batted 2-3 with a pair of singles.  Aylor had a double for EMU's only extra base hit.  She was also in the circle for the complete game, getting charged with all four earned runs in the loss.

The Royals are 0-4 after their season-opening trip to Atlanta.  They now are off for two weeks before heading to the Beach Blast in Virginia Beach on Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
