Box Score Desperately grasping for an ODAC win, the soccer men got what they needed thanks to a second-half goal from senior Adam Moyer (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock). After dropping their first four conference contests this fall, Saturday's 1-0 victory at Randolph-Macon improves the Royals to 4-6-2 overall and 1-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The Yellow Jackets came out as the aggressors in the game, firing four shots over the opening 13 minutes. Moyer put a shot on goal in the 15th minute, but a save kept it scoreless and set the tone for the rest of the half. Over the first 45 minutes, R-MC had a 10-2 edge in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks, but neither team could find the net.
That all changed quickly in the second. Eastern Mennonite won the opening minutes of the half and less than eight minutes into the frame, the complexion of the game took a turn. Midfielder Mark Mast (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) made a great push to the right end line and pulled R-MC's keeper to the near post. He then slotted a pass to Moyer who was wide open for a tap in from six yards for the 1-0 lead.
It was Moyer's second goal of the season. He has now scored two goals in each of his four years with the Royals.
There were a combined nine shots the rest of the way, but only one was on goal which Matthew Overacker (Mount Crawford, Va./Turner Ashby) made a clutch save on. EMU's backline of Joao Downs (Limon, Costa Rica/Colegio de Limon Diurno), Dylan Polley (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), Seth Suttles (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and Ryan Thomas (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) helped choke out any other stings by the Yellow Jackets to preserve the win.
The Royals had a slight advantage in shots in the second half but were out-shot overall 15-8. Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) had four of the attempts. Andrew Yoder (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) made three saves in the first half while Overacker charted the one in the second as they combined for the shutout.
EMU is back out of conference play on Wednesday, hosting a Johns Hopkins at 7:00pm.
