Box Score In a match of two big momentum swings, visiting Bridgewater got the biggest swing, coming from behind to beat the Royals in Harrisonburg, 3-1. Eastern Mennonite looked ready for a two-games-to-none lead before BC took off to send the volleyball women to 7-17 on the year.
Set one was tight until the Eagles used a 6-1 run to push ahead 19-14. They were still up 23-20 when EMU exploded. The home team scored the final five points of the match, including the last two on service aces, to steal the win 25-23.
The Royals used a handful of runs in the second to build a 20-13 cushion, and seemed on the verge of winning of the set. But Bridgewater rattled off 10 unanswered points, including three service aces, as EMU's back row surprisingly faded. Suddenly trailing 23-20, the women got back within a point, but didn't have enough as BC won 25-23.
The Eagles had the edge the rest of the night. They paired 8-1 and 7-1 runs to win the third set, 25-18. Bridgewater scored the first five in the fourth set and never trailed. The Royals got within 14-13 and 17-15 before losing 25-16.
Regan Cook (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) tied her career high with 14 kills to lead EMU. Sara Ritchie (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) put down 11 kills. Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) had 21 assists. She added 11 digs and three service aces. Kayla Smeltzer (Richmond, Va./Maggie L. Walker) also had three aces.
Libero Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) led all players with 21 digs, while Ritchie added 15. Cook, Smeltzer and Alexa Weeks (Montross, Va./Washington & Lee) each had three blocks, with one of Cook's being a solo stuff.
Eastern Mennonite is still in search of their first ODAC win of the season at 0-8. They have their final two home matches later this week, hosting Roanoke Friday night at 6:30pm followed by Hollins Saturday at noon.
