Box Score 2 The Royals ran into some tough competition on day one of the Guetle Invitational, hosted by Catholic University in Washington, DC. The volleyball women played a tough match against Marymount to open the day before dropping their first 3-0 loss of the year to Swarthmore.
Marymount 3, EMU 1
After dropping the first two sets to the Saints, EMU looked good in a 25-20 win in game three. But Marymount reversed the score in the fourth game to seal the decision.
Rachel Kennel (Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and D Probst (Willow Street, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) were the main cogs on offense, with Probst dropping down 12 kills and Kennel adding 11. Dani Driver (Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had 27 set assists. McKenna Carter (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) finished with four blocks, two solo and two assisted.
Libero Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) had three of EMU's nine service aces to go with 16 digs. Alena Yoder (Elkhart, Ind./Bethany Christian) had 18 digs and a pair of aces.
Swarthmore 3, EMU 0
The powerful Garnet made quick work of EMU, handing the women just their first sweep of the 2013 season. Probst led a balanced attack with six kills, while Carter knocked down five.
The defense put up a valiant effort, with four women collecting double digit digs. Miller led the way with 17 pickups.
Now 3-4, Eastern Mennonite plays two more on Sunday at the Guetle Invitational. They take on host Catholic at 11:00am, followed by Mt. St. Vincent at 1:00pm.
