Box Score 2 It took a late comeback, but EMU's softball women snapped a four-game skid with a pair of ODAC wins at Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon. The Lady Royals erased a 6-3 deficit in the seventh inning of game one and climbed out of an early deficit in game two to improve to 16-10 on the year. The women are also 5-5 in ODAC play.
EMU 10, Emory & Henry 8 – 8 innings
Homeruns were commonplace on the day, with each team scoring their first runs via the longball. Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) had a two-run smash for EMU in the third, and hit a solo shot in the fifth, but the women trailed 6-3 after five.
Hensley started Eastern Mennonite's rally in the seventh with a one-out walk. Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) had an RBI double and Molly Smith (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) followed with a three-run bomb to spring the women in front 7-6. Emory & Henry had their own comeback in the bottom of the inning, with a two-out double sending the game to extra innings.
The Lady Royals strung together three hits to plate three runs for the lead, and the Wasps only managed to score once in their half of the eighth as EMU grabbed the 10-8 win.
Hensley led the offense, going 4-4 with two homeruns and a walk. She had four RBIs and scored three runs. Smith finished 3-5 with three RBIs on her homer.
Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) pitched all eight innings with nine strikeouts to improve to 6-1.
EMU 10, Emory & Henry 6
The Wasps scored three runs in the first to jump ahead in the nightcap, but EMU scored five in the second to take over. Casey Racer (Madison, VA/Madison County) had a two-run double as the women had six hits in the frame.
Smith added her second homerun of the day in the third to bring in two more for a 7-3 lead. Emory & Henry had a three-run homer in their half of the third, however, trimming the lead to one.
EMU scored a single run in the fourth, and finally got some breathing room in the seventh when Allman jacked a two run homer. EHC went down in order in their final at-bat as the women got the sweep.
Smith batted 3-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Allman equaled Smith's longball and finished 2-2 with two runs, two RBIs and a walk.
Racer was 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Smith also started in the circle, but was chased in the first inning after giving up three runs. Aylor threw the final 6.1 innings to get her second win on the day and improve to 7-1.
Eastern Mennonite returns home on Tuesday, hosting Randolph College in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 3:00pm.
