Box Score 2 The Lady Royals seem to be picking up steam at the right time, taking a sweep of Sweet Briar at home Saturday. The women clinched an ODAC Tournament bid and are also riding a three-game winning streak heading into tomorrow's regular season finale against Lynchburg.
EMU 8, Sweet Briar 0 – 6 innings
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Eastern Mennonite jumped ahead in their first at-bat, scoring three times. The women rallied again in the third, stringing together four hits with two SBC errors to push the lead to 5-0.
The Lady Royals invoked the mercy rule in the sixth, when Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) led off with a walk and Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) brought her home with a double.
Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) pitched a no-hitter in the win, allowing only one runner on a walk. Aylor also struck out a career high 11 batters, including the final five she faced.
Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) and Cheyenne Cash (East Rockingham) were each 3-4 from the plate. Molly Smith (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) added a pair of singles and Brooke Sigrist (Crimora, VA/Fort Defiance) scored twice.
EMU 10, Sweet Briar 2 – 5 innings
Each team scored two runs in the first inning of game two to leave the score tied, but the Lady Royals erupted for five in the second. Hensley had a two-run double and Smith capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.
The women scored three more in the fifth to end the game. Ruthie Beck (Archbold, OH/Archbold) had a big double into the right field corner to score two runs, and Hensley ended it with a bases loaded single to left.
Hensley finished 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Beck was 1-2 with a walk, scoring twice and knocking in two more. Lauren Campbell (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) had a pair of hits and Casey Racer (Madison, VA/Madison County) touched home twice.
Campbell started in the circle for EMU but was relieved by Aylor in the first inning. Aylor pitched three scoreless frames to improve to 9-5 with her second win of the day. Kaitlyn Morris (Elkton, VA/Page County) threw the final two innings and struck out five of the six batters she faced.
Now 19-17 overall and 7-11 in the ODAC, the Lady Royals will try to improve their postseason positioning in Sunday's finale, hosting second-place Lynchburg at 2:00pm.
