Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Lady Royals showed a flair for the dramatic on Saturday, taking two more wins at the Sea Gull Classic in Salisbury, MD. A walk-off homer provided the first victory before EMU handed No. 18 Salisbury their first loss of the season.
The women won all four of their games over the weekend at the Classic as they improve to 7-5 heading into a six-game homestand.
EMU 4, Geneseo State 2
The Knights got on the scoreboard first with a two-out homerun in the top of the fourth inning, but an error in the bottom of the inning put EMU in front. Cheyenne Cash's (Elkton, VA/East Rockingham) two-out grounder was thrown wide of first, as two runners scored to make it 2-1.
Geneseo State got a sac fly in the sixth to tie it, setting up the dramatic seventh inning. Pitcher Kaitlyn Morris (Elkton, VA/Page County) kept the game tied by getting three groundouts in the top of the frame, and Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) led off the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle. She stole second with one away, but was stuck there when slugger Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) had a rare strikeout. Freshman Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, VA/Fort Defiance) got the clutch hit, however, smashing the game-winning homerun 40 feet over the center field wall to provide the walk-off win.
For Lucas, the longball was her third in the last five games. She also had a walk. Casey Racer (Madison, VA/Madison County) was 2-2 with a sacrifice, while Nicolette Cuevas (Suffolk, VA/King's Fork) reached twice on walks. Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) had a single and a walk.
Morris picked up her first win in an EMU uniform, holding Geneseo to six hits. She also struck out two batters.
EMU 6, No. 18 Salisbury 1
Although each team had their chances early, the game with Salisbury remained scoreless until the fourth when Cash scored on a two-out error. The Sea Gulls got the run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout.
Eastern Mennonite capitalized on another SU error in the fifth, as Miller singled in the go-ahead run with one away. After a walk loaded the bases, Racer laced a triple on a 0-2 count to bring in three more and push the cushion to 5-1.
Miller launched a homerun to left in the seventh to provide the final scoring, as Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) worked out of a jam in the bottom of the inning to lock up the win. Aylor scattered seven hits to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Racer had three of EMU's nine hits, and collected three RBIs. Miller finished 2-4, including her third homerun, along with two runs and two RBIs.
The Lady Royals get familiar with Gehman Field this week, playing three doubleheaders at home. First up is Mary Baldwin this Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm.
