The EMU softball team had a great opening to the Sea Gull Classic in Salisbury, MD, on Friday, averaging nearly two runs per at-bat in taking a wins from Hunter and Baruch.  The Lady Royals, now 5-5, play two more at the Classic on Saturday, including a rematch with nationally-ranked host Salisbury.

EMU 11, Hunter 3 – 6 innings
The women got things rolling in the third inning against Hunter, plating three unearned runs.  Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) had a two-run single.  EMU got another unearned run in the fourth before the Hawks got on the board with a three-run homer in the top of the fourth.

But the Lady Royals kept coming in the bottom of the frame, stringing together three more hits to score twice and push the lead to 6-3.  EMU did the same thing in the fifth, and then plated three in the sixth invoke the mercy rule.  Cheyenne Cash (Elkton, VA/East Rockingham) had a two-run single to score the final runs.

Cash paced the 15-hit attack with three singles, adding three RBIs.  Casey Racer (Madison, VA/Madison County) had two doubles, two runs and two RBIs.  At the top of the order, Hensley reached base three times with two hits and a walk.

Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) struck out six in six innings of work from the circle to the get the win.  None of Hunter's runs were earned.

EMU 9, Baruch 0 – 5 innings
The offense continued its roll against Baruch, getting two-run homers from both Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes, VA/Fort Defiance) and Angelia Miller (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) in the first inning to jump to a 4-0 lead.  Racer ripped a two-run triple in the third, when EMU pushed the edge to 8-0.

A sacrifice fly in the fifth provided the final scoring, and Molly Smith (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) held the Bearcats to two hits in the mercy-shortened shutout.  She struck out four batters.

Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) went 2-3 with a walk.  Hensley, Miller and Aylor each had two hits as well.
