Box Score 2 The Eastern Mennonite softball women picked up their first win of the season Friday after earning a split on day one of the Beach Blast in Virginia Beach, VA. Play continues on Saturday.
No. 6 Christopher Newport 6, EMU 2
The nationally-ranked Captains broke through with three runs in the third, and built up a 6-0 lead before EMU got rolling.
The Lady Royals got their runs in the sixth, when Brooke Sigrist (Crimora, VA/Fort Defiance) got a one-out single and Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) followed with her first homerun of the year.
Pitcher Kaitlyn Morris (Elkton, VA/Page County) only allowed six hits to CNU, but took the loss from the circle. Eastern Mennonite had just three hits, with Allman leading the way. She went 1-2 with the homerun, along with a walk. Sigrist singled, as did Cheyenne Cash (Elkton, VA/East Rockingham).
EMU 8, Methodist 5
The Lady Royals had a great battle with Methodist in their second game. EMU jumped in front with three runs in the top of the first, keyed by another two-run homer from Allman.
The Monarchs scored twice in the bottom of the first, but the women put up another three-spot in the second. Allman jacked her third homerun of the day, a three-run blast which put EMU up 6-2.
Two more runs in the fourth pushed the edge to 8-2. Methodist plated three in the sixth, but left the bases loaded in the seventh as the Lady Royals got the win.
Allman paced a 12-hit attack by going 3-4 with her two homeruns. She scored twice and had six RBIs. Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) was 2-4 and scored three runs while Sigrist went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. Sara Jenkins (Stanley, VA/Page County) also had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) pitched the first six innings and earned the win. Molly Smith (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) pitched the seventh and earned the save.
Now 1-3 on the season, the Lady Royals play two more tough contests at the Beach Blast on Saturday, tangling with Allegheny College and Washington College.
