Box Score 2 The EMU volleyball women had their three-match winning streak snapped Saturday, dropping two at a tri-match hosted by Guilford in Greensboro, N.C. The Royals opened with an ODAC loss to the Quakers, before dropping a five-set battle to Methodist.
Guilford 3, EMU 0
The women had a big lead in game one against the Quakers, but watched the home team take a 25-19 win in game one. The second game was close until a late surge by GC turned into another 25-19 decision. Guilford jumped ahead early in game three before ending strong on a 25-18 closer.
EMU's offense struggled to get into gear, hitting just .058. D Probst (Willow Street, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) led the way with eight kills, while Rebecca Hardy (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) added six. Dani Driver (Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had 23 assists.
Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) and Rachel Kennel (Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) each had nine digs.
Methodist 3, EMU 2
The match with the Monarchs was characterized by huge swings in momentum. MU controlled the opener, 25-14. They scored the first four in game two before Eastern Mennonite exploded to win 25-15.
Game three was tied at 10-10 before Methodist ran to a 25-14 decision. The Royals had a small lead much of game four, finally winning 26-24 to force the rubber match. EMU scored first, but the Monarchs then zipped up 9-2 and won 15-8.
Hardy and Probst again led the offense from the outside, with each hitting nine kills. Jessica Goertzen (Goessel, Kan./Goessel) had 17 set assists and a team high 16 digs.
Miller had 13 digs and three service aces, while Kennel added 13 digs and two aces. The women also had nine total blocks, led by four from McKenna Carter (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft). Probst and Kayley Argenbright (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) each had three stuffs.
Now 9-11 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC, the Royals finish off their conference slate with their next five matches. That stretch starts with a contest at Lynchburg on Wednesday.
