Box Score The Royals sent their seniors out in fine fashion Saturday night, netting the most goals in a game since 2009 in a 4-2 thumping of Randolph-Macon. In the final home game of the season, the EMU soccer men had a 3-0 lead by the 53rd minute and made it last.
The men hadn't scored four goals in a game since doing it twice during the 2009 season.
After pre-game ceremonies honored the eight seniors on the roster, the group took the field, along with two juniors and a sophomore, and hit the net just 16:38 in. Brendan Jeschke (Vienna, Va./James Madison) sent the ball into the box, where Jordan Hollinger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) one-touched it back out to defender Joao Downs (Limon, Costa Rica/Colegio de Limon Diurno). Downs rifled a shot through traffic for the 1-0 lead.
In the 39th minute, Mark Mast (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) set up a sprinting Christian Rhine (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) for a 2-0 cushion. Then shortly into the second half, Adam Moyer (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) sent a through ball from the right side in to Jeschke, who pounded it home for his second goal in two games.
The Yellow Jackets finally came alive later in the half, and scored in the 65th minute on a breakaway. Just over a minute later, however, Rhine streaked up the right side on his own and netted his second goal of the game to make it 4-1.
Randolph-Macon added a late goal on a free kick to produce the final score.
The Royals ended up getting out-shot 21-14, although shots on goal were relatively even. Andrew Yoder (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) made seven saves in front of the net for EMU.
It was the final home game for Jeschke, Downs, Hollinger, Caleb Golladay (Mt. Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson), Carl Becker (Vienna, Va./James Madison), Juan Flores (Mt. Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson), Ryan Connors (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) and Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fl./Sarasota Christian).
Now 4-13 overall and 2-8 in the ODAC, Eastern Mennonite wraps up their year at Shenandoah on Tuesday. Game time in Winchester is 7:30pm.
