Double Overtime Loss Denies EMU Men Postseason Bid

Box Score

Eastern Mennonite scored first Wednesday afternoon at Bridgewater, but couldn't hold off the Eagles in a 2-1 loss in double overtime.  Not only was the rivalry loss deflating, but it also knocked EMU's soccer men from the hunt of an ODAC Tournament berth.

The men are now 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.  They are eight points behind eighth-place Guilford in the league, with just two games remaining, and only the top eight make the ODAC Tournament.

The Royals controlled the opening 45 minutes, holding BC to just four shots and none on goal.  Jordan Hollinger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) knocked a header off the crossbar in the 33rd minute as the game stayed scoreless.  But just two minutes later EMU broke through.  After a couple of quick touches, Mark Mast (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) set up senior Brendan Jeschke (Vienna, Va./James Madison) for his first career goal.

The men's lead held until midway through the second, when the Eagles got a goal from Zach Hosler (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) to equalize in the 70th minute.  EMU had a flurry late in regulation, but a pair of inside shots were blocked as the game headed to OT.

Bridgewater had three shots in the first overtime, but a scoreless 10 minutes sent the game to double OT.

The Royals had a great push to start out, getting a corner and two shots in the first 26 seconds.  But they came up empty, giving the Eagles their opening.  After a corner of their own, BC got the game-winner from Sawyer Janes (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) in the 103rd minute.

Although shots were even at 17-17, Eastern Mennonite had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.  Corners were also in favor of the men, 9-6.

Mast finished with a game high four shots.  Christian Rhine (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and Juan Flores (Mt. Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) each had a pair of shots on goal.

Andrew Yoder (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) charted a pair of saves in goal for EMU.

The Royals have their final home game of the 2013 season Saturday night, playing host to Randolph-Macon.  Game time with the ninth-place Yellow Jackets is 7:00pm.  The men close the year at Shenandoah next week Tuesday.
