Box Score It's two games and two wins for the Royals. Two games into the 2013 ODAC season, the Eastern Mennonite field hockey women are 2-0, thanks to their 3-0 shutout of Roanoke Wednesday night at home.
Last year, when the two teams met in Salem, the Royals out-shot Roanoke, but lost 1-0. They women quickly made sure that wouldn't happen this time around, as Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) knocked in a shot from the top of the circle just 7:56 in. Melissa Cox (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) assisted off the corner.
EMU fired five shots over the final two minutes of the first half, but settled for the 1-0 lead at the break.
But the second half proved to belong to the Royals more than the first half. Ten minutes in, Cox triggered another penalty corner to Derstine, who handed off to defender Mandy Stowers (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) for the power shot from the top to make it 2-0.
In another ten minutes, the women were at it again off a corner. After the insert, freshman Mariah Martin (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) found the ball just inside the circle and she ripped in a shot for her first career goal.
The Maroons made a small surge late in the game, but the defense held on for their first shutout of the season.
Eastern Mennonite had a 22-10 advantage in shots, including 9-4 on goal. Mary Beth Danaher (Matoaca, Va./Matoaca) had four saves in the cage.
Cox finished with the one assist while also leading the team in shots, putting three on target. Camille Williams (Media, Pa./Delaware County Christian) put two on goal.
The Royals are now 2-8 overall, but more importantly 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and in a three-way tie for first place. The women are back out of the conference this Saturday when they host McDaniel at 1:00pm in Harrisonburg.
