Box Score Sometimes all it takes is one bad sequence. For the EMU soccer men Saturday afternoon, it was a span of one minute and 13 seconds where they gave up two goals to Lynchburg College, which was enough for a 2-0 loss on the road.
The Royals played a scoreless draw until late in the first half in front of Lynchburg's Homecoming crowd. But then with 4:23 left in the half, the Hornets' Zack Miller stuck in a free kick from 30 yards out. Just 1:13 later, LC struck again when Brandon Webster got a double assist to make it 2-0 heading into the half.
Tensions rose as the second half ticked away. With less than 20 minutes to play, the head official threw a flurry of cards (one yellow to EMU and two yellows and a red to Lynchburg), but the Royals still couldn't dent the LC defense playing a man up. The men fired four shots over the final 12:23, but the Hornets held on for the win.
Shots were relatively even in the game, although Lynchburg had a leg up in shots on goal, 10-5. Defender Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian) pushed up and had a team high two shots on goal. Brendan Jeschke (Vienna, Va./James Madison), Christian Rhine (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), and Jonathan Bush (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) each had shots on goal as well.
Keeper Andrew Yoder (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) collected eight saves.
Eastern Mennonite is 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the ODAC, but the men also have the hardest part of their ODAC schedule behind them. The Royals close the year with three games, and all are against teams in the lower half of the league standings. That stretch starts Wednesday at rival Bridgewater College. Game time is 4:00pm.
