Royals Forge Tie With Marymount To Open Year

Box Score

Featuring mostly new starters on the field, the Eastern Mennonite men's soccer team opened up their 2012 campaign with a neutral field game against Marymount hosted by Mary Washington in Fredericksburg.  EMU got a late goal in regulation to tie the score and earn a 1-1 draw.

Each team had a few shots early on before the Saints hit the net in the 28th minute.

The Royals went on the attack in the second half and finally earned a penalty kick with just 5:50 remaining.  Senior Ryan Eshleman (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) converted the PK to lock things up and send the game into overtime.

EMU released four shots in the first 10 minutes, but couldn't find net.  Marymount made a strong flurry late in the second OT, but sophomore keeper Andrew Yoder (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) made three straight saves in the span of a matter of seconds, and then a final stop in the final ticks to preserve the tie.

Eastern Mennonite had a 16-8 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Yoder finished with five saves.  Sebastian Olguin (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) and Brad Knispel (Sarasota, FL/Sarasota Christian) each had three shots for the Royals.

The men return to the field on Sunday to take on host Mary Washington.  Game time is 1:00pm.
